Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), is an all-India examination which is administered in eight zones across India by the GATE Committee. The committee comprises faculty from 8 renowned institutes which operate on behalf of the National Coordinating Board-GATE, a section of Department of Education in Ministry of Human Resources Development.
The institutes which conduct and administer GATE:
- IIT Bombay
- IIT Delhi
- IIT Kanpur
- IIT Madras
- IIT Roorkee
- IIT Guwahati
- IIT Kharagpur
- IISc Bangalore
GATE objectives:
The main objective of GATE is to identify the quality of the students and assess their potential to continue higher education. Through GATE, it is easy to evaluate the students who have the required skill set and consistency to pursue higher studies in the field of Engineering.

- Cracking GATE is important for you if you expect to get admission to postgraduate programmes and avail scholarship benefits for studying in various government-engineering colleges of India.
- Once you qualify in GATE, you are eligible to pursue doctoral programme in your chosen branch of science like, Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Application.
- Scoring well in GATE helps you to pursue M. Tech program in any of the leading institutes of India.
- After you qualify in GATE you become eligible for the award of JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) in the CSIR laboratories.

GATE Eligibility:
The candidates with following academic background are eligible to appear in GATE 2009 Examination:
- Bachelor’s degree holders Engineering/ Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy (4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.
- Master degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.
As a good score in GATE can help those who wish to pursue higher education in engineering, pharmacy and some disciplines of science from government institutes of India, quite a good number of students take the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. One can appear in GATE at various stages of their career.
GATE Examination Details:
- As you can appear for GATE even if you are not from engineering related field, it is important that you choose the right paper while applying for the exam.
- You have to opt for your subject and study as per the syllabus mentioned in the GATE brochure.
- You can either opt for Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering or choose from other subjects like, Mathematics, Physics, etc.
GATE 2009 Paper structure:
- Maximum marks 100
- Time 3 hours
- 60 questions (objective type)
- 1/3rd negative marking
Question paper pattern for GATE 2009:
Q.1 to Q.20: Will carry one mark each (sub-total 20 marks). [1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.]
Q.21 to Q.50: Each question will carry two marks each (sub-total 60 marks). [2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.]
Q.51 through Q.56 (3 pairs) will be common data ques. Each question will carry two marks. (sub-total 12 marks) [2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.]
Question pairs (Q.57, Q.58) and (Q.59, Q.60) will be linked answer questions. Each question will carry two marks. (sub-total 8 marks).
The answer to the second question of the each pair will depend on the answer to the first question of the pair.
If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is un-attempted, then the answer to the second question in the pair will not be evaluated. [There will be negative marks only for wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question pair i.e. for Q.57 and Q.59, 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. There is no negative marking for Q.58 and Q.60.].
Important dates:
Exam Date: February 8th Sunday 2009.
Results announcement date: March 15th Sunday 2009.
Commencement of sale of brochure and offline application forms: 22nd September 2008.
Commencement of online application form submission: 22nd September 2008
Last dates for issue of brochure and application form: Oct 17th 2008 (by post from GATE offices), Oct 24th 2008 (at bank counters), Oct 29th 2008 (at GATE office counters).
Last dates for submission: Oct 24th 2008 (Online submission), Oct 29th 2008 (Offline/ Online application at zonal GATE office.
Availability of GATE forms: from 1st week of October
Last Date for filling up forms: 1st week of November
GATE Exam Date: Middle of February (GATE 2009-10th February)
GATE Exam Results: Last week of March

What is New from GATE (2009)
- From GATE 2009, the validity of GATE score will be ONE YEAR only.
- Papers merged from GATE 2009 onwards
- With effect from GATE 2009, Information Technology (IT) paper is merged into Computer Science (CS) paper. There is no separate GATE Paper for IT. The name and code of the merged paper will be Computer Science and Information Technology (CS).
- Papers discontinued from GATE 2009 onwards
- Computational Science and Electrical Sciences sections have been discontinued in XE paper with effect from GATE 2009.
- Papers discontinued from GATE 2010 onwards
- It has been decided to discontinue the offering of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PY) paper with effect from GATE 2010.
